Interview – Argie Salango
9 Feb
Passend zu seinem Überskullshirt von heute haben wir Argie mal n bisl ausgequetscht. Hier kommt die Lektüre.
1.Hey Argie. Just a short biography, please.
My name is Argie Salango and I am 21 years old. A licensed nurse and a shirt design enthusiast.
2. And what is the history behind the „Paint Ala Skull “ design?
Paint ala Skull design was originally inspired by a grunge skull painting. I tried to reintrepret it and made it more appropriate for a shirt. It has a short stint over at DBH but it was here that it was deeply appreciated.
3. Where are you now located? Tell us about your current business and projects.
Im currently living in the very exotic country of the Philippines. =). My place is just an hour drive to Manila. Apparently, I dont have an ongoing business but I’m planning to establish one someday. As of now, Im just doing freelance works building my own portfolio and enjoying every opportunity that comes in.
4. Well, what would you suggest to a newbie, who just start his or her career as a designer?
Never stop dreaming. Always continue to explore. Shirt designing will always be a trial and error process and if you failed to get it on the first try then aspire for more. Try harder until you see and realize “that“ perfect design. Keeping a handy notebook would also be convinient escpecially when an idea or an inspiration just pop in. Just list them all baby!
5. Who are your favorite designers and artists around the world? Why?
My first favorite artist was Cova which I discovered through deviantArt. It was his works that inspired me to do graphics and shirts. Then here comes Jimiyo, Collision-theory and the other talented designers. I faved them because they have a pretty consistent and impressive design aesthetic.
6. What do you think about communities these days?
They are growing bigger and bigger and its happening really fast. Shirt design is really at its peak right now. Its booming and its nice to have these interactive communities since it provides artists and designers alike a great venue to flaunt their designs and express their own creative side.
7.Do you work on Mac or PC? Why did you choose this platform?
Its definitely PC. I grew up with it and I believe that it has the most user friendly interface.
8. Do you play videogames?
100% yes! Im a fan of the Harry Potter, Dungeon Siege and Command and Conquer video game series.
9. What are your hobbies?
DVD marathons. Fashion illustration. Shirts. Magazines. Thrift Shopping. Badminton.
10. What is THE place on earth you would like to visit?
I am at home buddy. I’m lazy! When I have a time off, I prefer to just stay at home but If im given the chance…I’d probably go visit Paris. Its a beautiful and romantic city. Every alley, every street, every structure, everthing were all purposely made for art. The inspiration was just all over the place. You can just sit down and start sketching.
11. How many hours do you work, and what is stress for you?
It depends on the day and on my mood. I will work if I feel like working and it could take me an hour or half day working. Sometimes, it drains you but you have no choice but to work and meet all the deadlines. That is stress for me. A time when you feel unproductive and non-functional.
12. Latest movie you liked?
Blindness (2008) by Fernando Meirelles and Howl’s Moving Castle (2004) by Hayao Miyazaki.
13. What’s your favorite sites? Why?
Deviantart, ABT and DBH.
Any plans for you in the future?
I will enroll myself on a fashion design school this coming July.
